The Benefits of Outsourcing

Especially for small and growing businesses, it’s not unusual to be a team of one.

Whether you’re managing an online store, a consulting agency, or another service-based company, many business owners find themselves quickly becoming a “Jack of all trades.” You might dabble in finance, marketing, maybe a degree of operations and supply chain management. But at the end of the day, your capacity is limited. There are only so many hours in a day—and revenue you can generate—before it becomes necessary that you scale.

There are a number of advantages when it comes to outsourcing. Especially during COVID-19, it can be difficult to carry high amounts of payroll expenses. If you’re still considering the possibility of outsourcing, here are our tips for getting started.

FINANCIAL FLEXIBILITY OF OUTSOURCING

To start, outsourcing typically offers an incredible amount of financial flexibility. Especially if your business has been heavily impacted by the pandemic, you might be looking for ways to adjust your overhead and cut back on payroll. If you’re able to outsource a handful of business tasks to other consultants, contractors, or agencies, you can focus more time, energy, and resources towards your primary services and offerings.

OUTSOURCING NON-CORE BUSINESS TASKS

This is also a great option for growing brands who may not be able to hire for full-time positions (yet!). And given the amount of flexibility in the position, there are so many opportunities to bring on additional team members while still focusing on the projects and items that you love most. Don’t like writing blogs? No worries! There’s a freelancer or consultant who does. Hate managing customer service emails? You can find someone for that, too.

Even if there are projects you still love but simply don’t have the time or capacity to take on, outsourcing is a great opportunity to scale and keep your services in-house.

HOW TO BRING OUTSOURCING “IN”

Maybe you’ve scaled beyond just one new team member and you’re looking to expand even more (congrats!). You’ll want to make sure that communication remains top of mind. Whether you choose to keep everyone in the loop via email, Zoom meetings, or Slack messaging, you’ll want to make sure that infrastructure is in place early. There are some other great apps that help with things like payroll (we love Gusto!), and you’ll want to get these processes ironed out sooner rather than later.
